Reading and Spelling Tuition

Catering for students from primary age to adults, I offer one-on-one tutoring online and in-person from my home office in Paddington, Brisbane, Australia.

Reading and spelling can be seen as the flip sides of the same coin; they are closely inter-related skills. As such, they are taught in tandem. Both reading and spelling skills proceed from the simple to the more complex and continually build on one another.

Tuition covers every aspect of learning to read and spell, from the basics of sound awareness (phonemic awareness) and letter recognition, to advanced reading and spelling strategies, including comprehension and editing skills.

A thorough assessment of the student’s areas of needs and strengths is conducted in their first 2 tutoring sessions. This helps me to understand which level of The Barton Reading and Spelling System to start the student on, and where lessons may need to be adjusted for an individual student.

A parent or in the case of adult learners, a support person, is encouraged to sit in on tutoring sessions so that they are better placed to understand the structured multi-sensory approach used in tutoring sessions. Not only will they be able to successfully help their child (or adult) to complete tutoring homework tasks, but they will also be able to see the progress being made from week to week.

I have developed and collected a large number of games and hands-on activities that students can borrow for homework practise if they attend in person. For online students I am continually adding to my collection of online games and activities that they can access for homework practise.

The Barton Reading and Spelling System

By the time most students start tutoring they are usually quite confused about how our written language works. The Barton Reading and Spelling System explains the logic and structure behind reading and spelling in an explicit and systematic step-by-step progression.

The Barton Reading & Spelling System:

  • Is research based
  • Follows Orton-Gillingham principles
  • Uses multisensory instruction
  • Is an explicit, systematic and sequential phonics program
  • Over the last 20 years has been proven to be successful in teaching dyslexic children and adults to read and spell.
Barton Materials

The Barton system is very comprehensive and covers: phonemic awareness; letter recognition; mapping sounds onto letters; spelling rules that are clear and make sense with prompts for the student; phonics, including advanced letter combinations; reading and spelling strategies that work; and comprehension skills.

One-on-one Individualised Tuition

Working one-on-one with individual students gives me the flexibility to adapt sessions to every individual’s needs. Each student is given as much time and support as they need to practice newly learnt skills until they have mastered them.

Research tells us that is more effective to break practice up into short intensive sessions of 10-15 minutes across the week.

A weekly commitment to approximately 2-3 hours of highly supported tutoring homework with a committed adult will give the student the extra practice opportunities that they need to improve their reading and spelling skills.
