My Journey

My own journey learning to read has instilled in me the firm belief that all dyslexic students can improve their reading if they are prepared to put in the hard work, and if they are provided with appropriate learning strategies and support.

Being dyslexic myself I struggled at school. I was depressed all the time because I felt like I was the only person who couldn’t read. I felt dumb, isolated, and frustrated. By the time I was in Year 5, I pretty much gave up - I felt that I would never learn to read.

Thankfully, my mother believed in me. After several years of desperation and thousands of dollars spent on programs and therapies that didn’t work, Mum finally came across a solution: the Barton Reading & Spelling System. Within just a few weeks of starting this program, reading and spelling began to make sense to me for the first time!

Now, as a trained Barton Reading and Spelling tutor, I am committed to understanding the latest research and the science behind how we learn to read. I believe it is important for struggling students to know that they too CAN learn to read successfully just as I did. They are not stupid or dumb. They just need to be taught the way they learn.
