Frequently Asked Questions

What age range do you cater for?

Children aged 7 and up, as well as functionally illiterate adolescents and adults who fit a dyslexia profile.

Where are you located?

I offer one-on-one tutoring online and in-person from my home office in Paddington, Brisbane, Australia.

How often do students attend?

2 x 1-hour sessions per week is recommended. However, you may choose attend 1 x 1-hour session per week.

Why is a support person required to sit in on sessions?

When a parent or support person joins tutoring sessions, they can see the student’s progress firsthand each week. It is also a great chance to ask questions, discuss any concerns, and get clear explanations about homework. Additonally, seeing the strategies in action makes it easier to support the student with their targeted homework practice.

How long does it take for my child to learn to read?

Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for reading and spelling difficulties. With consistent commitment to the regular homework practice required, students can expect to attain Grade 10 level (adult level) reading after completing 8 levels of the Barton Reading and Spelling System. This generally takes 4 years of tutoring. Some profoundly affected students may require longer.

Does the student need a formal diagnosis of Specific Learning Disorder in Reading (Dyslexia) to start tutoring?

Students who struggle with reading and spelling do not need a formal diagnosis of Specific Learning Disorder in Reading (Dyslexia) to attend tutoring.

However, please note: tutoring may not be suitable for students with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder); DLD (Developmental Language Disorder); expressive/receptive language disorder; EALD (English as an Additional Language or Dialect); or students who can already read accurately and rapidly, and spell well, but only have trouble with comprehension.

If you still feel tutoring may be helpful, please contact me and we may be able to arrange a trial period.

Do you have a Blue Card?

Yes. I possess the appropriate Blue Card applicable to my tutoring service.
